UNESCO to name Kalpourgan as the first handicraft village in the world

TEHRAN, July 24, YJC -Iran’s Deputy Director of Handicrafts Industry department announced the global registration of Kalpourgan village, southeastern Sisitan and Baluchestan province, as the first global village of handicrafts.

TEHRAN, Young Journalists Club (YJC) - Iranian Deputy Director of Cultural Heritage and Tourism Bahman Namvar Motlagh said that various nominees were introduced from all of the country as global handicraft cities and villages among which Kalpourgan village were elected for its precious pottery.

Namvar Motlaq noted that for a city or village to be registered as a global one, merely being popular or genuine do not suffice, rather what the ideas of that city or village is and to what extend a given craft is interested in to be learnt.

“From around the world the inhabitant of the village received orders of making potteries, but it was not possible to produce [potteries], for the number of the workplaces were few. in fact there was just one manufacturing workplace constructed in the time of Pahlavi regime and people financially were not capable of building another workshop. Today another two workshop also active in the village; thus, in case of World Crafts Council’s certification, Kalpourgan village will be globally registered after the Burnt City and Loot Desert as the third relic of Sisitan and Balouchestan” Namvar Motlaq added talking about three workshops in the village.

Kalpourgan is the name of a village situated in the southeastern part of Sisitan and Balouchestan, near Pakistan’s boarders. The potteries made by the this village’s women is known as Kalpourgan pottery.
