TEHRAN, December 14 - US President Donald Trump laments the loss of GOP Senate candidate Roy Moore, an accused child molester, yet asserting that it proves him “right.”

‘I wish we would have gotten the seat,’ Trump says after Alabama lossTEHRAN, Young Journalists Club (YJC) - “I wish we would have gotten the seat,” he told reporters at the White House on Wednesday, after Democrat Doug Jones secured most of the votes in the Senate race in Alabama.

The Republican president added that, “A lot of Republicans feel differently, they're very happy with the way it turned out… But I would have, as the leader of the party, I would have liked to have had the seat. I want to endorse the people that are running.”

Trump: I was right!

The loss would shrink the advantage of the Republican senators in the upper chamber to a 51-49 margin.

Trump distanced himself from the failure although he had fully endorsed Moore.

“The reason I originally endorsed Luther Strange (and his numbers went up mightily), is that I said Roy Moore will not be able to win the General Election. I was right! Roy worked hard but the deck was stacked against him!”

Some Republicans, meanwhile, have cheered the defeat, including Tennessee Senator Bob Corker, who tweeted, "Decency wins," calling the Tuesday night, "a great night for America."
Moore came under fire after a woman accused him of initiating a sexual encounter when she was 14. The judge is also accused of inappropriate advances on other women when they were teenagers.
