Tehran, YJC. -- UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon and the United Nations Security Council have both strongly condemned the terrorist attacks near the Iranian embassy in the Lebanese capital, Beirut, Tuesday which killed at least 23 civilians and injured over 100 others.
"The Secretary-General calls on all in Lebanon to recognize that such appalling and indiscriminate acts of violence target all in Lebanon,” said a statement issued by his spokesperson at UN Headquarters in New York.

"He urges all Lebanese parties to act with restraint and to support the institutions of the state, and particularly the security forces, as they seek to prevent further acts of terrorism.”

Mr. Ban and the Security Council both extended their condolences to the families of those killed in the attack, which occurred in the Bir Hassan neighbourhood, as well as to the Governments of Lebanon and of Iran.

"The Secretary-General hopes that those responsible for this attack will be brought to justice expeditiously. He reiterates the determination of the international community to support Lebanon’s security and stability,” his spokesperson said.

In a statement read out to the press, the Council too underlined the need to bring the perpetrators of these "heinous acts” to justice.

"Members of the Security Council appealed to all Lebanese people to preserve national unity in the face of attempts to undermine the country’s stability…,” the 15-member body added.
