TEHRAN, YJC. There is more to the Nowruz table fish than just beauty.

Today people buy the goldfish for their Nowruz table almost entirely because it is a tradition, or at best because of its beauty there.

But there is a strong scientific point behind the fish at the Nowruz table. The fish actually represents the time of the year in which the New Year occurs.

The Nowruz falls between March 20 and April 1 (except for leap years when it falls on the period from March 21 and April 2, like this year). The zodiac sign for the period between March15 and April 14 is the pisces.

So the origins for placing a bowl of fish on the Nowruz table could have ranged from simply reminding one of the time of year, to symbolical representation of life as going on with the revolving fish in the globe of water.
