Iran’s Permanent Representative to the Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW) Alireza Jahangiri categorically blasted use of chemical weapons by terrorist groups in Iraq and Syria.
Addressing the 84th session of the OPCW Executive Council in The Hague, Jahangiri, who is also Iran’s Ambassador to the Netherlands, called on the OPCW member states to try more to make a world free of chemical weapons.He also called for not politicizing Syrian chemical case in the OPCW and helping to improve the situation in the country.
Jahangiri further raised deep concerns about use of chemical weapons by extremist and terrorist groups in Syria and Iraq, and called for condemning these measures by the international community as well as adopting necessary moves to prevent
reoccurring such tragedies.
Jahangiri asked OPCW member states to avoid providing financial and military support for the terrorist groups.
The OPCW is the implementing body of the Chemical Weapons Convention (CWC), which entered into force in 1997. As of today, the organization has 192 member states, who are working together to achieve a world free of chemical weapons.
