Iran's Zarif stresses linking Chabahar with Gwadar in Pakistan visit

TEHRAN, Young Journalists Club (YJC) - "After visiting Iran's oceanic port of Chabahar, important talks in #Pakistan with PM @ImranKhanPTI, Army Chief Bajwa, FM @SMQureshiPTI & Speaker @AsadQaiserPTI. Focus: Regional security, growth, connectivity & complimentarity of key nodal points Chabahar/Gwadar. #NeighborsFirst," Mohammad Javad Zarif wrote in a tweet on Friday night.

The proposal to connect these two key ports was put forward by Iranian Foreign Minister Javad Zarif in a meeting with Pakistani officials.

“I’ve come here with a proposal for the government of Pakistan for connection between Chabahar and Gwadar… We believe that Chabahar and Gwadar can complement each other,” Zarif was quoted as saying during a meeting with Foreign Minister Shah Mahmood Qureshi.

Iran, India, and Afghanistan signed a trilateral transit agreement in Tehran in May 2016, which allows the three countries to open new routes of connection by converting Chabahar port into a transit hub.

The port in Chabahar, only about 100 kilometers from the Pakistan border and located on the Indian Ocean, is Iran’s largest outside the Persian Gulf.

The port is about 72 km from its Pakistani counterpart Gwadar, which is being developed by China.
