Tehran, YJC. Iranian Parliament Speaker Ali Larijani has called on the international community to pay due attention to terrorists’ violence against women, especially in Iraq and Syria.
The violence against women and girls committed by terrorists like ISIL in Syria and Iraq and the kidnapping and killing of women and girls are crimes that must be addressed by the international community, Larijani told the annual meeting of the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) in Geneva on Monday.
For example, in an attack on a Syrian village in the middle of the night, more than 160 people were massacred and 200 women and girls were kidnapped by the al-Nusra Front, Larijani said.
He also pointed ISIL’s treatment of the Yazidi women and girls in northern Iraq and women in Kobani, the Kurdish populated city in northern Syria.
"These are just examples of hundreds of crimes and violence against women committed by terrorists which are happening,” he regretted.
He added that in the recent years a new injustice against women has been promoted under the name of jihad nika (marriage jihad) "which is enough to blacken the image of the current century.”
He also pointed to the attacks on the Gaza Strip by the Zionist regime in recent months in which women and children were the main victims.
"Remember the unprecedented violence against women and children in the third Gaza war,” Larijani said in reference to Israel’s war on the Gaza Strip from July 8 to August 26.
Prior to his speech, Larijani also discussed a range of regional and international issues, particularly the prolonged crisis in Syria, with Syrian Parliament Speaker Mohammad Jihad al-Laham.
During the meeting, the two parliament speakers emphasized the need to fight terrorism, which poses a serious threat to the world.
Larijani also held separate meetings with the parliament speakers of Lebanon and other countries on the sidelines of the meeting.
