Iran’s ambassador to Berlin Alireza Sheikh Attar in interview with Mehr pointing out that Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif is to attend the 50th Munich Security Conference stated "Beside delivering a speech at the Munich Security Conference, the Foreign Minister will also make speeches at two meetings in Berlin.”
The 50th Munich Security Conference will start Friday January 31 and last 3 days.
Sheikh Attar stated that Zarif will deliver speech to a board of experts on Sunday February 2.
Asked if the Foreign Minister will have any meetings while in Germany, he said "There have been many requests for meeting the Foreign Minister. Right now we are checking the requests. I think 4 to 5 meetings will take place. Also, Mr. Zarif is obviously to have a meeting with the German Foreign Minister.”
Asked if Zarif will be meeting the High Representative of the Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy for the European Union Catherine Ashton, he maintained that although there is the possibility, nothing in special has been done to arrange such a meeting.
Pointing out that the FM will make a trip to Berlin as well, Sheikh Attar asserted "Beside Munich, Mr. Zarif is expected to make two speeches in Berlin, one of which will be attended by the German economic section.”
The Iranian ambassador further added that Iran and Germany have made plans to engage in closer relationships and that within the coming six months, delegations from ministries, parliaments, economic organizations, and private sectors of each country are to visit the other.
Maintaining that Germany holds moderate positions regarding Iran compared to other EU states, he said "Even in the heat of sanctions, German officials would try to make an opening for relations. Right now they have the same policy, especially since they support the Geneva negotiations and in relation to Syria also they favor Iran’s role. In other words, the German try to make better sense of relations with Iran and to convey this sense to others.”
