Independent media vital in country: Iranian 1st VP

TEHRAN, October 28 - The government needs independent, sensitive, explicit, and courageous media, which is beneficial for both the government and the society.

TEHRAN, Young Journalists Club (YJC) - Jahangiri made the remarks in the inauguration ceremony of the 23rd Press Exhibition in Imam Khomeini Mosalla, Tehran, on Saturday.

Saying that the criticism by media is the most important asset for running the country, Jahangiri added, 'Anyone who can't stand the criticism from the official media of the country will definitely go astray ad will waste national resources.'

He said, 'Media should be committed to ring the bell timely so that the wrong path gets corrected.'

He added that the government should work with the media even if their criticism language is bitter and should not turn to media phobia.

Jahangiri said the Iranian society and governments need news agencies and press to be trusted by the people, to have political and social authority, and to be seen and heard.

In addition to Vice-President Jahangiri, the Minister of Culture and Islamic Guidance Abbas Salehi and some other senior officials and cultural figures attended the inauguration ceremony.

The Exhibition in an area of 13,000 square meters hosts 940 media in 600 pavilions, including some 100 monthly journals, 54 weeklies, 52 quarterlies, over 115 online media, 70 local and provincial media and over 60 newspapers and press institutes.

In addition, over 80 political and economic as well as 80 cultural and artistic media are also present in the exhibition.

The event will be underway until November 3.
