Zarif: India-Pakistan lingering row not good for regionTEHRAN, Young Journalists Club (YJC) - In an interview with ICANA on Tuesday, Zarif said he has held talks with his Pakistani counterpart and is also in contact with Indian officials to do what he can to help settle the tensions between Islamabad and New Delhi.

He stressed that continuation of such strained relations between India and Pakistan is not in the interests of the region.

As regards the plans for enhancing security along Iran-Pakistan common border, Zarif said Pakistani authorities have promised to do whatever necessary to prevent a recurrence of terrorist attacks on Iranian forces by Pakistani-based groups.

In a telephone conversation with his Pakistani counterpart Shah Mehmood Qureshi last week, Zarif expressed regret over the recent clashes between India and Pakistan, and voiced Iran’s readiness to contribute to peaceful settlement of disputes between the two Asian states.

The top Iranian diplomat also called on both India and Pakistan to show self-restraint and sit for talks over their disputes as soon as possible.

It came after India last week launched an airstrike inside Pakistan, claiming it targeted militants behind a Feb. 14 bombing in Indian-controlled Kashmir that killed 40 Indian troops.

Pakistan retaliated by downing two Indian fighter jets and capturing a pilot who was later handed back.

India and Pakistan have fought three of their four wars over Kashmir, which both claim in full but administer separate portions of.
