Tehran, 28 May_Authorities in Madrid have declared a 10-day mourning period in the wake of the global pandemic, which has cost the lives of over 27,000 people in Spain.
National and regional flags flew at half-mast across Spain on Wednesday in memory of the victims of COVID-19.
In Catalonia, the regional parliament, government, and city hall joined for a minute of silence.
Despite relaxing some of the strict lockdown rules, there was still a sense of anxiety in the densely-populated Catalan capital. A cautious regional government had the city cut off from neighboring towns. Café terraces, which are usually packed with people at this time of the year, struggled to attract customers.
A number of restaurants in Barcelona remained shut, out of precaution while waiting for the next phase of de-confinement. Barcelona’s cemeteries have reopened to visitors and families of the victims with strict social distancing guidelines and safety measures.
As Spaniards pay respect to the victims of the COVID-19 outbreak, major changes and shifts in attitude are already taking place in their daily lives.
Among the greatest lessons learned from this deadly crisis is the need to put public health first, as many are already wondering about the strike of the next pandemic.
