Thursday, 06 August 2020_Iran sent its first and second batch of medical and humanitarian assistance to Lebanon, after a massive explosion in Beirut which has killed more than 100 people and wounded over four thousand others so far. The blast damaged buildings across the capital , sending a giant cloud into the sky.

Speaking to Press TV, the Iranian Red Crescent Society officials said they will send more humanitarian assistance to Lebanon in the coming days and by any means necessary. They also said they have offered the option of treating some of the injured in the Iranian hospitals.

22-member medical team, including general practitioners, orthopedists, anesthesiologists, operating room specialists, pediatricians, neurologists, nurses and field hospital experts were also dispatched to Lebanon on Wednesday.

The Iranian team will set up a Rapid Deployment Hospital (RHD) in Beirut. Reports say three of Lebanon's hospitals have been destroyed by the blast.

Iran was among the first countries to offer condolences and react, with the government sending emergency medical aid and field hospitals hours after the humanitarian tragedy to support the medical response in Lebanon, a country already reeling from the effects of overlapping crises before disaster struck its capital.

According to the Lebanese government officials, the blast was caused by 2,750 tons of ammonium nitrate stored unsafely in a warehouse, which is used as a fertilizer in agriculture. The Lebanese government has called for a two-week state of emergency with the country observing an official period of mourning for three days.
