Tehran, YJC. Rahmani Fazli has said that terrorist groups are largely funded from illegal drugs.

The Iranian Interior Minister Abdoreza Rahmani Fazli speaking at a meeting on Tuesday said that terrorist groups are funded to a great extent from the smuggling of illegal drugs.

He noted that Iran is neighbor to the world’s biggest narcotics producer and said "In the year 92 [2013-14] 210 thousand hectares of land was under narcotics agriculture which lead to the production of 7 thousand tons of opium worth $68 billion.”

Stating that the agriculture of narcotics in Afghanistan is supported by terrorist groups he added "We are seeing that the benefit gained from the agriculture of narcotics in Afghanistan feeds many terrorist groups. Aids going to the ISIS also come from the benefits gained from the smuggling of narcotics. The group are themselves smugglers of narcotics.”

Pointing to the records of Iranian police fighting the trafficking of drugs he said "Last year 573 tons of narcotics from different kinds were discovered in our country. On an average scale the discovery rate is around 1.5 tons per day while we believe that the same amount is also consumed inside the country.”
