Saturday, 6 November 2021 (YJC)_ The first question that pops up in our mind on a rainy day is how to save water and reduce the wastage.

Watershed Management is Vital to Tackle Water CrisisRecently, the precipitation amount reached its maximum in northern parts of Iran; however, the question of why Iran has always been threatened by water shortage has yet to be answered. Taking a closer look at this issue, it seems that water resources management (WMR) or Watershed management is the problem.

In this regard, a famous Iranian clergyman, Shahab Moradi brought forth a statement in a TV program to explore the fundamental issues Iran is facing regarding the watershed management.

He first pointed out the fact that rain often washes dirt, rock and other material away with itself and said that “Soil gets washed after the rainstorm, it breaks the tree and takes the branch with itself, and finally, it fills water dams. Right now, most parts of our dams’ capacity are filled with mud and things like that. Dredging is another mandatory issue in this regard; however, it won’t become the priority because no one demands it, and also political movements do not value it.”

Shahab Moradi also highlighted the fact that “Watershed management needs unity but the country neglected it" and added “Now the general belief is that dams should not be constructed but watershed management is in demand. We need to dredge the dams and when we face drought, it is essential to control all flood channels. We also have to supervise all paths in order to shift the water to be stored behind dams.”

He, finally, put emphasis on the necessity of changing cultural attitude both in the field of management and in the field of urban ecology.”

Shahab Moradi is one of the well-known scholars among different classes of Iranian people specially the youth and families. He is a public figure on TV (IRIB) and the founder of a non-governmental charity “Madar-e Mehraban Charity Foundation”, that feeds children in need.
