Thursday, 18 November 2021 (YJC)_ The UN envoy to Afghanistan has expressed concern about the escalation of ISIL attacks in the country, warning that the Taliban's activities against ISIL rely on "illegal detentions and killings of ISIL suspects".

UN envoy: ISIL attacks in Afghanistan have increasedDeborah Lyons, the UN special envoy for Afghanistan, said ISIL attacks in the country had "increased" this year compared to the past.

Speaking at a UN Security Council meeting, she said that the reason for the increase in ISIL activity was the inability of the Taliban to prevent the group from expanding.

Lyons added:
ISIL was once limited to a few provinces and Kabul, but now appears to be present in almost all provinces and is increasingly active.

According to statistics provided by the UN Special Representative for Afghanistan, ISIL had 60 attacks in Afghanistan in 2020, but this year 345 attacks have been attributed to the group or ISIL has claimed responsibility.

She also clarified that the Khorasan branch of ISIL continues to target the "Shiite community".

Deborah Lyons warned that the Taliban's activities against ISIL relied on "illegal detentions and killings of ISIL suspects."

Explosive attacks and targeted ISIS attacks in Afghanistan have increased since the Taliban-led government took office.

The Taliban, however, claim to have suppressed ISIL by launching various operations.
