Friday, 14 January 2022 (YJC)_ The Secretary-General stated that in order to save the lives of the Afghan people, a way must be identified for the conditional release of the confiscated assets of this country.

UN Secretary-General: Release Afghanistan's assets to save livesReferring to the Afghan crisis, UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres said in a press conference that humanitarian operations desperately needed more money and more flexibility.

Referring to the seizure of Afghanistan's assets by the United States, Guterres added:
Cold winters and frozen assets are a deadly combination for the Afghan people, and laws and conditions that prevent money from being spent to save the lives of the Afghan people and economy must be suspended in these emergencies.

He added that international financial assistance should be allowed to pay public sector workers and assist Afghan institutions in providing medical care, education and other vital services.

Referring to the UN Secretary-General's assistance in injecting cash into the Afghan economy, he described it as "inadequate and a drop in the bucket".
Rapid launch of Afghanistan's banking system is essential to prevent economic collapse and activate humanitarian operations.

Emphasizing on maintaining efficiency and helping the Central Bank of Afghanistan, Guterres stated:
A path must be identified for the conditional release of Afghan assets. We need to do more to quickly inject liquidity into the economy and prevent the collapse that will lead to the poverty and hunger of millions.

He called on the international community to support and protect the Afghan people, and called on the Taliban to recognize and protect fundamental human rights, especially the rights of women and girls in Afghanistan.
