Turkey's emphasis on peaceful resolution of tensions between Russia and the West

Friday, 21 January 2022 (YJC)_ Turkey stressed the need for a peaceful settlement of the Russian-Western dispute over Ukraine and the need for dialogue between the leaders of Moscow and Kiev.

Turkey's emphasis on peaceful resolution of tensions between Russia and the WestTurkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan on Thursday called for a dialogue to resolve tensions over Ukraine.

According to the Anatolian News Agency, Erdogan said:
Our hope is that Mr. [Vladimir] Putin [President of Russia] and [Volodymyr] Zelensky [President of Ukraine] will meet face to face as soon as possible.

On the other hand, Turkish Foreign Minister Mevlüt Çavuşoغlu referred to the tensions over Ukraine and said:
Dialogue between Russia and NATO, as well as Russia and the United States, is crucial in this regard.

Referring to Friday's meeting between Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov and his US counterpart Anthony Blinken, Cavusoglu said:
Tensions are rising. We continue to communicate. The goal is to reduce tensions.

Ibrahim Kalin, a spokesman for the Turkish president, also said on Wednesday:
Turkey is ready to play any role in reducing tensions between Russia and Ukraine. President Recep Tayyip Erdogan is in talks with Russian President Vladimir Putin and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky.

The Turkish government's proposals come as Lavrov has previously said that Turkey has an important role to play in the Ukraine conflict.
