Chinese state media reported that Chinese President Xi Jinping had a telephone conversation with Russian President Vladimir Putin.
According to AFP, the Chinese president called for talks on the Ukraine crisis.
Xi told Putin that Beijing supports resolving the crisis between Russia and Ukraine through peaceful means and negotiations.
China's foreign minister has previously said that Russia's move to recognize the Donetsk and Luhansk republics was linked to escalating tensions in Ukraine over the non-implementation of the Minsk agreements.
In a telephone conversation with the Chinese president, Putin reportedly announced Russia's readiness to hold high-level talks with Ukraine.
