Saturday, 21 May 2022 (YJC)_ Reacting to the Taliban's new order to cover female TV presenters, the former Afghan president said that Afghanistan was an Islamic country and that women always wore the hijab.

Hamid Karzai: Afghan women have always worn the hijabFormer Afghan President Hamid Karzai reacted to the Taliban interim government's new hijab policy by saying:
Wearing a chador and covering the face as a hijab is not common in Afghanistan and comes from the culture of some countries in the region.

In an interview with "Cyanan", Karzai added in response to the compulsion of women presenters to cover their faces:
This is not rooted in Afghan culture and they do not need women to cover their faces.

He continued:
The issue of hijab is clear. Afghanistan was a deeply Muslim country 1400 years ago, and during this time Afghan women have always observed the hijab.

Karzai continued:
The tradition of the Afghan people for centuries has been to wear only a chador, and if you look at nomadic women, they have only worn a chador for many years and never cover their faces.

The former president of Afghanistan also emphasized:
Burqas and face masks are not part of our culture, but were brought to Afghanistan years ago.
