"Last night Mehdi Nowrouzi embraced martyrdom … while fighting a direct fight with members of the terrorist Islamic State in Iraq and the Levant (ISIL) group,” a statement by a local Iranian news agency said on Sunday.
This is the second killing of an Iranian fighter in Iraq in recent weeks.
A senior Iranian military officer was killed back in December while on an advisory mission to Samarra.
Brigadier General Hamid Taqavi was killed as he was conducting the advisory mission in cooperation with the Army of Iraq and other mobilization forces to counter the ISIL militants around the shrine of the eleventh Shia Imam Hasan al-Askari.
