TEHRAN, Young Journalists Club (YJC) -“The Amazon Washington Post fabricated the facts on my ending massive, dangerous, and wasteful payments to Syrian rebels fighting Assad…..,” Trump first tweeted on Monday night.
“So many stories about me in The Washington Post are Fake News. They are as bad as ratings challenged CNN. Lobbyist for Amazon and taxes?” the president continued.
Trump described The Washington Post, which is owned by Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos, as "a lobbyist weapon against politicians."
"Is Fake News Washington Post being used as a lobbyist weapon against Congress to keep Politicians from looking into Amazon no-tax monopoly?" he tweeted.
Trump was probably referencing an article about his decision to end a CIA program that backed what Americans call moderate Syrian opposition fighters.
Quoting two unnamed US officials, The Washington Post reported last week that the Trump administration had decided to end the CIA’s years-long covert program to arm and train militants fighting the government of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad.
The CIA program began in 2013 as part of the efforts by the Obama administration to overthrow Assad but produced no tangible results. Another downside of the program is that some armed and trained rebels defected to Daesh and other radical groups.
On Friday, US Special Operations Forces Commander General Raymond Thomas confirmed reports about the end of the CIA’s covert program.
General Thomas said that the decision by the Trump was not intended to please Russia, which has been running a military campaign against terrorist groups in Syria since 2015.
