TEHRAN, Young Journalists Club (YJC) -Iranian freestyle wrestler Kamran Qasempour has delivered rather acceptable performances at the Dmitry Korkin 2017, and could bring home a bronze medal.
On Sunday, Qasempour overpowered a representative from Uzbekistan 6-0 in his opening round contest of men’s 85-kilogram weight category at the Sports Training Center in the Russian city of Yakutsk.
The Iranian wrestler then overcame his compatriot Emaeil Mahmoudi 5-1 in his second bout, before prevailing over his Russian opponent 4-3 in the next.
Qasempour, however, did not manage to triumph over a contestant from Russia in the semifinals and was relegated to the repechage round.
The Iranian sportsman downed his Indian rival in the last contest, and grabbed the bronze medal.
Earlier in the tournament, Younes Emami had outmuscled a competitor from Russia 5-1 in the final bout of men’s 65-kilogram weight section, and collected a gold medal for the Islamic Republic of Iran.
The Dmitry Korkin Cup 2017 kicked off in Yakutsk, Russia, on September 30 and finished on October 1.
The international tournament reportedly brought together dozens of athletes from 19 countries, including Bulgaria, Finland, Georgia, Iran, Japan, Romania, South Korea and Turkey.
