TEHRAN, Young Journalists Club (YJC) - The F-22 Raptor war planes arrived in South Korea on Saturday for the air drills alongside the South Korean Air Force just days after North Korea tested an intercontinental ballistic missile (ICBM) described as Pyongyang’s highest launch to date.
The US Defense Department is also expected to dispatch F-35A and F-35B stealth jet fighters, F-16C war planes, B-1B bombers and other aircraft to join the war games, according to a report by the South’s Yonhap News Agency.
This is while the South Korean Air Force will deploy several models of its own fighter jets and support aircraft to participate in the war games, in which they will conduct aerial strikes on mock North Korean missile and nuclear sites, as well as missile transporters.
The drills will mark the first time that six of the stealth fighters fly over South Korea at once.
While US authorities verify that North Korea is capable of producing nuclear weapons and that the latest missile-launch had the capability of reaching the American east coast, they point out that it is not yet certain whether the new missile can deliver a heavy nuclear warhead.
