TEHRAN, January 16 - Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif and his Russian counterpart Sergei Lavrov in a phone conversation on Tuesday discussed the Syrian crisis and the 2015 nuclear deal between Tehran and world powers.

Iranian, Russian FMs discuss Syria, JCPOATEHRAN, Young Journalists Club (YJC) - “The two sides exchanged views on a range of international issues, including the Syrian peace process in the context of the Syrian Congress of National Dialogue in Sochi...,”

Russia’s foreign ministry said in a statement, according to Reuters.

The congress is expected to be held in Russia’s resort Sochi in late January.

On November 22, 2017, the Iranian, Russian and Turkish presidents held talks on the Arab country’s crisis in Sochi.

Following their meeting, the three presidents attended a press conference and issued a joint statement, calling for an all-Syrian congress, which will see representatives from all sides in Sochi to exchange views on the fate of the country and pave the way for the drafting of a new constitution and elections.

Zarif and Lavrov also conferred on the situation surrounding the 2015 nuclear deal between Tehran and world powers, known as the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA), according to the statement.

On Friday, US President Donald Trump again waived sanctions against Iran that were lifted as part of the landmark nuclear deal.

“Today, I am waiving the application of certain nuclear sanctions, but only in order to secure our European allies’ agreement to fix the terrible flaws of the Iran nuclear deal,” he said in a statement.

He further claimed, “This is a last chance. In the absence of such an agreement, the United States will not again waive sanctions in order to stay in the Iran nuclear deal. And if at any time I judge that such an agreement is not within reach, I will withdraw from the deal immediately. No one should doubt my word.”
