TEHRAN, March 20 - US President Donald Trump has appointed a lawyer to his legal team who has been critical of Special Counsel Robert Mueller suggesting that the FBI is seeking to “frame” Trump with an imaginary crime.

Trump hires lawyer who says FBI, DOJ tried to frame the billionaire with false crimeTEHRAN,Young Journalists Club (YJC) - "Former US Attorney for the District of Columbia Joe diGenova will be joining our legal team later this week," Jay Sekulow, a counsel to the president, said in a statement on Monday. "I have worked with Joe for many years and have full confidence that he will be a great asset in our representation of the president."

DiGenova pushed a theory earlier this year on Fox News that the entire special counsel probe is a farce, because it stems from "a brazen plot" by the FBI "to illegally exonerate Hillary Clinton and, if she didn't win the election, to then frame Donald Trump with a falsely created crime."

According to DiGenova, the FBI wanted to frame him because "they didn't like Donald Trump, they didn't think that he was fit to be president, and they were going to do everything within their power to exonerate Hillary Clinton. And if she lost, to frame Donald Trump with a false crime, because they didn't think he should be president."

“Make no mistake about it: A group of FBI and DOJ people were trying to frame Donald Trump of a falsely created crime,” he added.

DiGenova was a staunch supporter of Deputy FBI Director Andrew McCabe’s firing from the FBI. In yet another interview on Fox, he said McCabe deserved to be fired.

“He's done a number of things worth punishment, including careening through obstruction of justice from the beginning of the Trump campaign, doing everything he could to exonerate Hillary Clinton in the email server case corruptly. ... He should be fired. He should have been fired a long time ago. And if he loses some of his benefits, that's good for the country. And it's the least that can be done to him.”

The New York Times which initially broke the story on diGenova’s hiring, reported that he has worked in Washington legal circles for decades. He is a former Republican-appointed United States attorney for the District of Columbia.
