TEHRAN, August 28 - Bottles were thrown and fireworks set off in the eastern German city of Chemnitz on Monday, August 27, as several thousand far-right supporters and counter-demonstrators took to the streets following a fatal stabbing that authorities blamed on a Syrian and an Iraqi.
TEHRAN, Young Journalists Club (YJC) - Police said on Twitter that fireworks and projectiles were thrown from both camps resulting in several injuries. Far-right demonstrators chanted "We are the people!" and "lying press".
The protests followed a violent demonstration on Sunday, when around 800 demonstrators responded to calls on social media by far-right groups for protests over the killing of a 35-year-old German man.
Some of the protesters had thrown bottles and rocks at police officers. Civilians were also attacked and harassed, including an 18-year-old Afghan man and a 15-year-old German girl, a police spokeswoman said.
Police said the stabbing occurred after a row, but gave no further details. Local prosecutors said on Monday they had arrested two suspects, a 22-year-old Syrian man and a 21-year-old Iraqi man.
