US Senate approves bill to keep government running into 2019TEHRAN, Young Journalists Club (YJC) -The US Senate has approved legislation to temporarily fund the government and avert a partial federal shutdown after President Donald Trump backed off his demand for money for a border wall with Mexico.

Senators in the upper chamber of Congress passed the measure on Wednesday, which would keep government running until February 8 and avoid a potential crisis.

The House of Representatives is also expected to pass a temporary funding bill before Friday’s deadline, when funding for a portion of the government expires.

Should the legislation become law, the border money fight would drag into the next Congress, which could prove even more difficult for Trump after Democrats take control of the House.

Trump appeared to retreat on his shutdown threats after promising a fight over funding the contraction of a wall on the US-Mexico border, which had been central to his presidential campaign.

Just last week Trump said he would be “proud” to shut down the government over his demand for $5 billion for the wall.

Many of Trump’s supporters were frustrated by his retreat, describing the move as caving on his pledge and saying it could hurt the president’s 2020 re-election prospects.

On Twitter, Trump appeared to respond to criticism by insisting that “one way or the other, we will win on the Wall!

A partial government shutdown could affect over 800,000 federal workers and nine of the 15 Cabinet-level departments, as well as dozens of agencies, including the departments of Homeland Security, Transportation, Interior, Agriculture, State and Justice, as well as national parks and forests.

Congress used to pass annual appropriation bills, and the president signed them into law. But the shutdown scenario has become routine in recent years, leading Congress and the White House to a crisis over government funding.
