TEHRAN, Jan 17 -At least nine people have lost their lives after a car bomb was detonated in Colombia’s capital Bogota in what the authorities condemned as a terror attack.

Car bomb at police academy kills 9, wounds several in Colombian capitalTEHRAN, Young Journalists Club (YJC) -The deadly explosion, which also wounded 10 others, took place on Thursday at the General Santander School, a police cadet training academy, in the southern part of Bogota.

It also shattered windows of adjacent apartments and those in close vicinity of the site in the area around the academy.

According to eye witnesses, the explosive-laden vehicle rammed into the academy grounds moments before the huge blast. Pictures posted on social media showed a charred vehicle surrounded by debris on academy’s leafy campus.

Colombia President Ivan Duque in a statement called the bomb attack a “miserable terrorist act ... against our police,” adding that he was returning to Bogota from the west of the country, where he took part in a meeting on security.

He also said that he had already ordered security forces to locate the perpetrators of the deadly crime and bring them to justice.

“All of us Colombians reject terrorism and are united in confronting it. We won't bend in the face of violence,” Duque added.

There is no word yet on who might be behind the “terror” attack. It is also not clear yet whether the casualties were civilians, police or both.

During decades of bloody civil war between the government and various leftist rebel groups, car bomb attacks were frequent. Thousands were killed or wounded in the bombings.

The worst of such wars, however, ended when Bogota reached a peace deal with the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia (FARC) in 2016.

Furthermore, the South American country has myriad crime gangs, some of which operate across large swaths of rural areas and others in major cities. Many of these gangs are involved in the production and trafficking of cocaine, largely to the United States and Europe, as well as extortion and other crimes.
