TEHRAN, Feb 12 - Renowned US film star George Clooney has slammed the British public and the media for the way they have been treating Meghan Markle, a former US actress and current wife of Prince Harry, saying the “vilifying” culture could lead to a tragedy like the one that ended in Princess Diana’s death in the late 1997.

British media ‘vilifying’ Meghan like Princess Diana: George ClooneyTEHRAN, Young Journalists Club (YJC) - “She's a woman who is seven months pregnant and she is being pursued and vilified and chased in the same way that Diana was, and it's history repeating itself. And we've seen how that ends,” said Clooney on Tuesday.

The comments come days after the British media renewed their pressure on Meghan by publishing a sad letter she reportedly wrote to his father before she married Harry last May. Meghan is desperately seeking a reunion with Thomas Markle after relations broke before the royal wedding.

The publication of the letter by the Mail on Sunday comes as some like Clooney believe the media and the public in Britain have tried to target Meghan simply because she has been the first ever non-white member of the royal family.

Meghan’s alleged feud with Kate Middleton, the wife of Prince William, has also added to controversies while there have been reports about clashes between Harry’s wife and royal staff.

“They're just chasing Meghan Markle everywhere, she's been pursued and vilified,” said Clooney at an event in Los Angeles, adding, “She's getting a raw deal there, it's irresponsible. I'm sort of surprised by that.”

Clooney, who attended Meghan’s wedding last year, said the treatment of Meghan in the press reminded everyone of princess Diana, who was killed in an accident in Paris years after she separated from Prince Charles, the son of reigning monarch Queen Elizabeth II.

Nearly 20 years after her death, many believe that Diana, mother of William and Harry, was the victim of a grandstanding culture in the royal family.
