TEHRAN, Apr 23 - US President Donald Trump's support for the Saudi-led war in Yemen is a strategical "miscalculation" that will cost him the presidency, according to an American political commentator.

Trump's support of Saudi Arabia miscalculation: AnalystTEHRAN, Young Journalists Club (YJC) - Last week, Trump vetoed a push by the US Congress to end American support for the Saudi-led war on Yemen.

Political commentator Scott Bennett, who is a former US Army analyst, told Press TV in an interview on Monday that a decision to wage war against another country was not up to Trump.

He said that it was written in the US Constitution that only the people could take America to war, not the president.

Bennett said the congressional resolution to end American support for the Saudi-led war in Yemen, which has so far claimed thousands of innocent lives and left the impoverished nation struggling with the biggest humanitarian crisis in the world "is a clear message to the President that Congress is saying the the war Saudi Arabia is engaged in is not something that the people of the United States want to participate in."

He said that Trump's supports for the war is because he sees Saudi Arabia is purchasing arms from the United States.

"I think the president is making an error because the American people do not want to be participating in the Saudi-led genocide against the Yemeni people and that is what this is turning into," he said.

"Fifty-six thousand people killed – that is more than the number of Americans that died in Vietnam war – it is a staggering number of people," Bennett noted.

He said for the inhumane Saudi aggression against the Yemeni nation and the use of biological warfare and disease in this war "Saudi Arabia could be branded a war criminal and its aiding and supporting nations, such as the United States remain as co-conspirators."

"This is an example of war crimes because you have biological war and you have cholera, you have disease, food shortage, water shortage. This is turning into a very ugly global scenario."

Bennett described Trump's support for the brutal Saudi regime as a miscalculation in foreign policy.

"So I understand the president making some political decisions to maintain the illusion of the United States maintaining a positive relation with Saudi Arabia – but I think it’s a miscalculation," he said, adding, "President Trump’s foreign policy has been riddled with miscalculations and errors – from his failure to honor the JCPOA*, and pulling the United States out of that  --  its was a drastic error."

Bennett cited other Trump miscalculations in regard to Russia and Venezuela.

He said Trump’s current policies “run counter to the promises he made to the American people and could end up being the destabilizing force that removes him from the presidency in 2020."
