TEHRAN, Apr 30 -The Iranian Navy’s most advanced domestically-built destroyer and other vessels join a ceremonial patrol marking the National Day of the Persian Gulf.

Watch Iran Navy marking Persian Gulf dayTEHRAN, Young Journalists Club (YJC) - The ceremony was held on Monday on the anniversary of a successful military campaign by Shah Abbas I of Persia in 1622, which drove the Portuguese navy out of the Strait of Hormuz. The waterway separates the Persian Gulf from the Sea of Oman and has come to host the bulk of the world’s oil shipments in modern day.

The vessels partaking in the ceremony included the Sahand warship, corvettes, speedboats, and logistical vessels.

The main duty for protecting the waters is trusted with the naval forces of Iran’s Islamic Revolution Guards Corps (IRGC), the country’s elite defense forces.

The Monday ceremony, a show of the Navy’s promptness to join the IRGC in defending the waters, came as the Islamic Republic has warned it could shut the Strait to traversing tankers in response to the United States’ hostile measures aimed at hampering Iran’s oil exports.
