TEHRAN, May 28 - A retired US Army colonel said there is no evidence that Tehran has played a role in attacks on several oil tankers near the Emirates' territorial waters weeks ago, reminding that the ships were now at the bottom of sea, if Iran were behind the sabotage operations.

TEHRAN, Young Journalists Club (YJC) - A total of four tankers were damaged in an incident near the UAE port of Fujairah in early May, with two of them belonging to Saudi Arabia and the remaining two reportedly sailing under a Norwegian flag and UAE flag.

The US military has blamed the Iranian elite unit for damage sustained by the commercial ships, but gave no proof of its claims while the nature of the incident remains unknown.

"There is no evidence that Iran had anything to do with the attacks on the tankers," Douglas Macgregor told Fox News, adding, "Far from it, in fact, anybody who knows the Iranians knows that if they were actually trying to sink those ships they'd have done."

The colonel warned that it looks like another "false flag" designed once again to "create tension and drag us into the fight".

Stressing Iran doesn't threaten the United States at all, Macgregor stated that "Saudi Arabia and the Emirates in the [Persian] Gulf are trying to escalate the tension and the conflict by
dragging us in", while "the Israelis would appreciate" it.

Several analysts believe that the “sabotage operations” against the tankers were a covert operation launched by Mossad and the CIA aiming to deceive the world that Iran was responsible for the attacks.

In one of the first reactions to the "sabotage operations" in the Gulf of Oman, the Iranian foreign ministry expressed Tehran’s concern about the negative consequences of the incident on the security of shipping and maritime transport, warning against plots against regional security and stability.

Foreign Ministry Spokesman Seyed Abbas Mousavi expressed concern about explosion at the Oman Sea affecting the oil tankers, calling for clarifying dimensions of the sabotage on some oil tankers.

Tehran also called on the regional states to take care of any adventurism by foreigners.
