TEHRAN, Jul 3 -As expected Nigel Farage and his newly-formed Brexit party tried to disrupt proceedings at the opening of the European parliament in Strasbourg by turning their backs during the playing of the European anthem.

Brexit party makes a splash at the opening of EU parliamentTEHRAN, Young Journalists Club (YJC) -The move by the Brexit party’s 29 Members of the European Parliament (MEPs) threatened to convulse the EU parliament in anarchy on its opening day and drew strong reactions from other MEPs.

The EU parliament’s president, Antonio Tajani, admonished the Brexit MEPs for their “disrespect”, whilst leading British Labour party MEP, Richard Corbett, dismissed the stunt as “pathetic”.

Renowned for his flamboyant style of leadership, Farage appears set to not only decisively influence the final leg of the Brexit process in the UK, but more importantly perhaps he is best-placed to influence the Tory leadership race.

On granting Britain a long extension after the UK failed to leave the EU at the end of March, EU leaders made clear that British leaders should use the seven-month extension in a "spirit of loyal cooperation" and "constructive abstention" from disruptive activities.

Farage is clearly determined to drive a truck through EU demands. Furthermore, Farage issued a warning of his own to the UK political establishment by reminding the two contenders for the post of prime minister of their duty to deliver Brexit by 31 October otherwise they are “toast”.

Founded earlier this year, the Brexit party scored a crushing victory at the EU parliamentary elections back in May. Many British political analysts believe that unlike its ideological predecessor, UKIP, the Brexit party has the potential to make a breakthrough at internal UK elections as well.

At the EU level, the Brexit party is the joint largest party alongside Germany’s centre-right CDU-CSU alliance. But Nigel Farage’s group is clearly the most dynamic within the EU parliament and many political observers believe the Brexit party will energise other far-right and anti-EU political currents in Strasbourg.
