Set to take effect Monday at midnight, the restrictions come in the backdrop of the Trump administration’s highly criticized efforts to contain the outbreak in the United Sates.

"If you don’t have to travel, I wouldn’t do it. We want this thing to end. We don’t want a lot of people getting infected," he said.

The US president had earlier announced restrictions on travelers from European countries part of the Schengen Area..

On Friday, the Democratic-held House of Representatives passed aimed at providing free testing for all Americans along with paid family or sick leave.

“As the new coronavirus spreads across the United States, the time has come for restaurants, retailers and other industries that rely on low-wage labor to abandon their parsimonious resistance to paid sick leave,” wrote The New York Times editorial board in a column published Saturday. “Companies that do not pay sick workers to stay home are endangering their workers, their customers and the health of the broader public.”

The board urged  businesses and companies to pay for their employees’ sick time to prevent the spread of the virus.
