Tuesday, 04 August 2020_A US court is seeking US President Donald Trump’s tax returns as part of a criminal investigation of his organization.
Trump said Monday that the latest measure by Manhattan District Attorney Cyrus Vance is “continuation of the witch hunt,” similar to the so-called Russia probe by special counselor Robert Mueller.
“This is just a continuation of the witch hunt. It’s Democrat stuff,” Trump told reporters. “They failed with Mueller. They failed with everything. They failed with Congress. They failed at every stage of the game. This has been going on for three and a half, four years... This is a continuation of the worst witch hunt in American history.”
The Supreme Court, to which Trump has nominated two justices so far, said in a 7-2 ruling in July that a grand jury investigation into Trump would be legitimate, such as the one now launched by Vance.
Vance's office justified the measure, citing “possibly extensive and protracted criminal conduct at the Trump Organization,” as reported in media.
"In light of these public reports of possibly extensive and protracted criminal conduct at the Trump Organization, there was nothing facially improper (or even particularly unusual) about the Mazars Subpoena, which [was] issued in connection with a complex financial investigation, requesting eight years of records from an accounting firm," the prosecutors wrote in the court filing.
