Thursday, 06 August 2020_A US Confederate monument at the Madison County Courthouse of the state of Alabama was vandalized in the overnight hours Wednesday.
WAAY-TV in Huntsville reported, that authorities were at the courthouse Wednesday morning investigating the vandalism. The statue appeared to be covered in red paint.
Calls for Confederate iconography to be removed or relaocated in Alabama have increased this year, with successful efforts in Birmingham and Mobile. The University of Alabama in Tuscaloosa also removed three Confederate plaques earlier this summer.
Removing any statue older than 40 years comes with a $25,000 fine from the state of Alabama under the Monuments Preservation Act enacted in 2017.
The Confederate statue vandalized this morning in downtown Huntsville has been a source of contention for months, igniting weekly protests. Protesters want the statue removed and relocated elsewhere.
