Wednesday, 16 September 2020 (YJC)_ Yoshihide Suga, the new leader of Japan's ruling Liberal Democratic Party, was formally elected and named as Japan's new prime minister to succeed Shinzo Abe.
71-year-old Yoshihide Suga succeed his long-time ally Shinzo Abe, who is resigning because of his health problems.
Yoshihide Suga was elected as Japan's next prime minister by the country's lower house of parliament on Wednesday, succeeding Shinzo Abe who resigned because of his health deficiency and promising to continue his signature economic policies.
Suga was elected by both chambers of parliament, winning 314 votes in the 465-member lower house and 142 votes in the 245-member upper house.
It is expected that the new prime minister forms a cabinet filled with ministers who served under Abe.
It has also been mentioned that the former Chief Cabinet Secretary and Abe loyalist will announce his cabinet later on Wednesday and is expected to keep many of Abe's team in place.
Suga has vowed to push forward with Abe's policies such as "Abenomics," a mix of measures including monetary easing and fiscal stimulus aimed at easing deflation and stimulating growth in the Japanese economy.
