Monday, 05 October 2020_Racism in France is rising. That's the conclusion of the annual report on "racism, anti semitism and xenophobia", published recently by the French National Commission on Human Rights.

Racism on the rise in FranceWhat is the reason for this increase in racism? But experts believe that the French state itself, its political leaders and the mainstream media, are directly responsible for the raise in racism by inciting hatred, creating fear and stigmatizing the Muslim community, Blacks, Gypsies and migrants in general.

That's what explains political analyst Olivier Le Cour Grandmaison in a recently published book "Racisms in France", a collective work written by 24 authors. If the official values of the French Republic are "Liberty, Equality and Fraternity", it hides and even denies France's colonial past.

And now, the French government wants new laws against what separatism. But experts say that the current laws are more than sufficient to sanction criminal activities.

President Macron's new bill aims at tightening control over mosque financing and associations serving religious communities. With up to 5 million Muslims, France has the largest Muslim population in Western Europe.

The proposed bill will be discussed here in the French parliament early next year. But Muslims already fear that, with the actual stigmatisation, they will be the target, again, of racist attacks.
