The death toll from the earthquake in Haiti on Saturday has risen to 724 people, up from 304 reported earlier today, according to AFP.
It is unclear at this time whether the number of confirmed fatalities is expected to increase later today.
As Haiti begins to deal with the aftermath of Saturday’s 7.2-magnitude earthquake, the country is also preparing for the threat posed by a tropical storm heading its way.
Tropical Storm Grace, which is projected to hit the island between Monday and Tuesday, could hamper rescue efforts by bringing heavy rains and strong winds.
The storm was 55 miles (90km) southwest of St Croix and 100 miles (160km) southeast of San Juan, Puerto Rico on Sunday morning.
It is thought to have maximum sustained winds of around 40 mph (65 kph), with rainfall totals of about 3 to 6 inches forecast for the Leeward Islands, Virgin Islands and Puerto Rico through Tuesday.
