Monday, 23 August 2021 (YJC)_Iranian airport authorities say travelers arriving in the country should provide tests results showing they are free from the corornavirus regardless of their vaccination status.

Iran imposes mandatory PCR test for travelers vaccinated against COVIDA senior official in charge of operations in Tehran's Imam Khomeini Airport (IKA) said all travelers arriving in the airport are required to show negative COVID-19 test results even if they have been fully vaccinated against the disease.

“The spread of the delta variant of the coronavirus has caused us to mandate tests for even vaccinated people to prove they are completely free from infection,” said Mohammad Reza Seyf, who heads safety and quality control at IKA.

Iran had been allowing travellers having taken full doses of approved coronavirus vaccines to enter without taking a polymerase chain reaction test.

However, Seyf said Iran’s civil aviation authority (CAO) had announced the new requirement on Saturday, adding that airlines had been notified since last week to inform travelers about the new changes.

A later notice by CAO published on the official IRNA news agency said that travelers arriving in Iran from a list of 41 high-risk countries have to present valid PCR test results while they would be subject to second PCR test upon arrival.

The report said passengers from Brazil and Uruguay should be confined to a two-week quarantine in addition to taking the second PCR test.

The changes come as Iran continues to report record number of infections and deaths from the coronavirus amid a rampant surge of the delta variant.

Health ministry figures announced on Sunday showed daily death toll from the virus had reached an all-time high of 684 from a caseload of 36,419 recorded over the past 24 hours.
