Wednesday, 24 November 2021 (YJC)_ A Russian Defense Ministry official has announced a new Russian air defense network, including the S500 and S550 systems, to counter enemy supersonic and space missiles.
A Russian Defense Ministry source says Russia intends to use the S-500 and S-550 systems jointly to defend against missiles and space threats.
According to the Tass news agency, the Russian military official said that the S-550 will not replace the S-500 because it is not a more advanced system than the S-500, and in fact it is a lighter version and its combat targets are different from the previous type.
He added:
The S-500 and S-550 will be Russia's new air defense network and will protect strategic targets and facilities against supersonic missiles. In fact, combining these new defense systems with the S-350 system and short-range systems will be effective against all hostile targets.
Russia has recently announced the completion of a test of its new air defense system capable of intercepting intercontinental ballistic missiles, cruise missiles and supersonic missiles.
Russian Deputy Prime Minister Yuri Borisov has said that Russia has completed testing of its S-500 surface-to-air missile system and has begun supplying it to the armed forces.
The S-500 is a weapon that Moscow hopes will strengthen its defense capabilities and become the best-selling export product. The S-500 has been described as a space defense system capable of intercepting intercontinental ballistic missiles, supersonic cruise missiles and aircraft.
