In a statement issued Friday morning, North Korea criticized the United States for boycotting the Games, despite announcing that it would not participate in the Beijing Winter Olympics due to the actions of "hostile forces" and the spread of Corona.
According to Reuters, the North Korean Olympic Committee and the Ministry of Culture and Sports have sent a letter to their counterparts in China stating that they support Beijing despite not attending the Winter Olympics.
North Korea's membership in the International Olympic Committee has been suspended until the end of 2022 after it refused to send the team to the Tokyo Olympics last year due to a corona outbreak. Pyongyang is therefore unable to participate in the Beijing Winter Games.
A statement from North Korea posted on its official news website said:
We were not able to participate in the Olympics due to the actions of the hostile forces and the global epidemic, but we fully support our Chinese friends in their efforts to host the great and amazing Olympics.
The statement described the actions of the United States and its allies as "an insult to the spirit of the International Olympic Charter and an attempt to tarnish China's international image."
