Sunday, 16 January 2022 (YJC)_ Deputy Secretary-General of the National Security Council of Ukraine claims that a hacker group linked to the Belarusian special services, which has a history of cyber operations against a number of European countries, is responsible for attacking Ukrainian government websites.
A senior Ukrainian security official has claimed that Kiev believes a hacker group linked to the Belarusian intelligence service carried out a cyber attack on Ukrainian government websites on Friday.
Ukraine blamed Friday's cyberattack, which disrupted government websites for threatening messages, on a group called UNC1151, the deputy secretary of the National Security Council of Ukraine, Seri Demedyuk, told Reuters. The destructive actions were mostly behind the scenes.
According to Reuters, Demiuk claimed that the group used malware similar to the malware used by a group affiliated with the Russian intelligence service:
We [initially] believe that UNC1151 may be involved in this attack.
The office of President Alexander Lukashenko of Belarus has not yet responded to requests for comment on the Ukrainian official.
According to the report, he further stated:
The demolition of the sites was just a cover for the more destructive actions that were taking place behind the scenes, and we will feel the consequences in the near future. This is a cyber espionage group affiliated with the Special Services of the Republic of Belarus.
