US government and industrial officials told Reuters Wednesday morning that Washington intended to ban Russian flights using US airspace following flights to the European Union and Canada.
One source said US President Joe Biden was expected to announce the ban in a speech Wednesday at the State of the Union address.
According to Reuters, the White House, which declined to comment on the statements of these sources, has had extensive talks with US Airlines in recent days.
United Airlines and Air Transport Services (UPS) announced on Tuesday that it had suspended flights over Russian airspace and joined other major US airlines, including Delta Airlines and American Airlines.
In recent days, due to the ban on the use of Canadian and European airspace, Russian flights of American origin have been practically banned.
After the EU and Russia closed their airspace to each other, airlines are now facing a long-term closure of east-west flight corridors.
Earlier, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelinsky reiterated his call on European countries to establish a no-fly zone in the country.
